Mark is a native San Diegan who had his first introduction to the local scientific and biotechnology community at a young age, when his chemist father taught him how to make buffer solutions and help out in his labs at UCSD and two Sorrento Valley startups he founded in the early 1980’s.  Mark went on to graduate from La Jolla High School and then earned his B.S. degree in chemistry at UCSD, conducting research with Professor Murray Goodman and also working in the fledgling medicinal chemistry department of Signal Pharmaceuticals (later acquired by Celgene).  Mark completed his doctoral studies in organic chemistry at UC Irvine with Professor Larry Overman, and since 2002 has conducted research at the Johnson & Johnson laboratories on the Torrey Pines mesa.  Mark has been an ACS member since 1996.
