Chair Notes

Dear ACS Members,

A couple of days ago, CSUSM hosted the Local Section’s seminar titled “Lessons Learned: Things We Learned Along the Way” – featuring Drs. Graeme Freestone, Ben Pratt, and Mark Tichenor as panelists. I hope many of you were able to attend this valuable and informative seminar and discussion.

Coming up October 1st will be an AACC / ACS joint meeting titled “A Proteomic Predictor of Lipoprotein Function and Coronary Artery Disease: From Conception to Launch” featuring Dr. Cory Bystrom from Cedars Sinai Hospital as the speaker.

October 15th is our 2019 Distinguished Scientist Awards banquet honoring our two awardees, Drs. Peter Grootenhuis and Sabine Hadida from Vertex. Sadly, Dr. Peter Grootenhuis passed away a few weeks ago due to complications from ALS. The Local Section would like to honor his legacy by making a donation to the ALS Foundation. His colleague, Dr. Sabine Hadida, will present the award address titled “Discovery of CFTR Modulators for the Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis”. We will also honor some of our ACS Local Section volunteers: Dr. Bill Tolley has earned the Tony Bottone Award for Outstanding Service, and Valerie Kuck the Outstanding Committee Chair Award for her work on ACS Project SEED.

November 14th, we will have a seminar on the uses of artificial intelligence to rapidly decode the gut microbiome and its interaction with the immune system, enabling the development of novel microbe-based products to improve cancer therapies. This seminar will feature Dr. Stephanie Culler from Persephone Biome and will be hosted by Takeda California. Finally, December 3rd will be our year-end holiday party at Sufi’s.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: We are looking for someone who has an attention to details and enjoys numbers. If that sounds like you, please contact me for the opportunity to run for treasurer of our local section.

Remember, all members are welcome to attend the Executive Committee Meeting. If interested, the next meeting will be September 30th at 6:00 PM at Samumed (9381 Judicial Dr., San Diego, CA 92121) and food will be provided. We hope to see new faces.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Board and Committee members for their hard work providing great service to our members. If you are interested in serving your Local Section please contact any committee chair or myself at, if you have any questions.
