Chair Notes

Dear ACS community,

I hope everyone who is reading this newsletter is staying healthy by safely isolating. I am writing this Chair’s message from my office at work while wearing a face mask while the Covid-19 worldwide pandemic is still raging. California has nearly completely reopened with new procedures and protocols for public interactions. I urge you to continue to stay at home as much as possible until a vaccine is available. Remember we are responsible to keep ourselves and loved ones safe and healthy as possible by avoiding gatherings, washing our hands, and wearing a mask when around others!

The Executive Committee of the American Chemical Society San Diego Local Section decided to cancel all in person meetings and events until it is safe to resume gathering. The annual Earth Fair celebration held in Balboa Park which was rescheduled for September has been officially cancelled. We are using Zoom online meetings successfully for our monthly executive committee meeting. In addition, the National ACS has decided to make the ACS Fall 2020 Meeting & Expo completely VIRTUAL! It will be held August 17-20, 2020 online only. Details for attendees, presenters, and organizers will be announced over the coming days and weeks.

On June 18th, we decided to try a Zoom member meeting with a presentation by the County of San Diego Regional Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT). I would like to thank Brad Long and the entire team for their heroic efforts in keeping us all safe from chemical incidents!

Our next Executive Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, July 9th, 6 PM, online as a Zoom meeting. As always, all members (this means you) who wish to become more involved or experienced with our Local Section are invited to attend. You will need to contact me at for an invite. Please RSVP so I may add you to the list of attendees.

Thank you,

James Caldwell Ph.D., 2020 Chair
