Chair Notes

Dear ACS Members,

Summer is in full swing here in San Diego! We are more than half way through the year and so many great activities have happened and we have a lot more coming up in the next few months. As always, none of these can happen without the support of my fellow board members and local section members.

To recap some of the recent happenings in our Local Section:

On Friday, July 19, people gathered at the Hojel Hall of the Americas Auditorium to participate in our 22nd Annual MedChem Symposium. The day featured outstanding scientific presentations, and it once again was a successful collaboration between our ACS Local Section and the UCSD Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Thank you to Ben Pratt, Mark Tichenor and David Wallace for leading this annual event.

On Thursday, July 11, about forty people gathered at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse for our annual Fifty-, Sixty-, and Seventy-Year ACS Member Luncheon. We dined on a lovely buffet lunch, engaging discussions and a few of this year’s honorees shared their journey into the world of science and the path their careers in chemistry led them. Thank you to Ken Poggenburg for organizing another successful event and Jim Shih for taking photos.

Turning to August, we have our Fall National Meeting hosted here in our beautiful city!! We will be represented by our councilors and many of our local members will attend or present stimulating talks and poster sessions. This event will be taking place, August 25th-29th – ACS National Meeting & Exposition theme: “Chemistry & Water”. Details can be found at:

We need volunteers to help with our Local Section booth. The duties include providing helpful suggestions to members about places to visit or eat around town and help them find their meeting room. If you are interested, please contact Surya K. De at

As always, you are welcome to join us at our next Executive Committee Meeting on Thursday, August 1st. Come see what the Section has planned for the remainder of the year or suggest events you would like to see happen.
